『 Our Constant Pursuit of Attention and Acceptance
We live in a crowded world and more than a quarter of our society is based on acceptance and socialization. Humans separate would not be at the place we are now. It is our tribal nature and how we move in packs that took us to the top of the food chain. This instinct still exists in a more complex form and although we don’t think about it, that pack mentality still controls many of our decisions (thus making it instinct). Before we had homes, cities or even clothing for that matter we were human. We may have been bigger and more archaic in nature but we were still human. Thus, our weaknesses of today were true thousands of years ago as well. One man could not take down a mastodon but 10 men with tools could. We learned through experience that we needed other humans to survive. Not just to recreate or to make our lives easier by giving someone else our job but for the survival of our civilization.

Looking Back on Today
This title does means a lot to me. It is the title of a song by The Ataris and has many points or symbolism that relates to something that has taken up thousands of hours of my life. School. I have attended school since kindergarten. Kindergarten through 12th grade is 13 years and oh what a time it has been. Looking back on that time, though, I say to myself, “I wasted it and wish I could do it over”. Even when I was younger and did not have fun, when I look back on the things I did, I had a blast and will never get that back. Of course, it did not hit me that school would end until it was too late. It was not until I had 2 more weeks of school left before I noticed how much of it I wasted. To reiterate wasted, I did not waste it in a sense of wasting time, but I did not reach my full potential and succeed to the level I could have.

Transitions: Boyhood to Manhood
For thousands of years, different civilizations have required a “rites of passage” type of ceremony or act. Even today, some Native American tribes require their young men to go out in the woods without food and survive until they have a vision and see their animal. All over the world, there are civilizations that still do these acts. Yet, in the US we do not have this type of thing. I think all we have is you get to drive when you are 16, can smoke and go clubbing when you are 18, and can drink and go to any strip club when you are 21. I know the laws may be different in your state, but regardless, this is it for us. There is not a ceremony or act that makes you a man.

Connecting Mind and Body
Most people today are in their own world. They walk around, day after day with no awareness of what is happening around them, or what effect their actions have either. When we were kids, there was a solid connection between our mind and body. Of course, physically there is a connection, but there is also a spiritual connection.
